Author Guidelines

Authors are invited to make a submission to this journal.

Submissions must comply with the publication guidelines and standards of Cadernos de Segurança Pública and be submitted through this platform in Word format (.doc). The file must be named using the title of the manuscript.

All authors must have at least a college degree.

Each contribution must comply with the authorship limit specified for each section (e.g. articles: up to six (6) authors; interviews: up to two (2) authors; and reviews: one (1) author only). Submissions that exceed this limit will not be considered.

The list of references must be arranged in alphabetical order at the end of the text and in accordance with ABNT (Brazilian Association of Technical Standards) standards:

  • NBR 10520-2023 (for citations);
  • NBR 6023-2018 (for references);
  • NBR 6028-2021 (for abstracts);
  • NBR 6022-2018 (for general rules governing scientific articles).

Direct quotations must include the page number from which the information was taken. The journal does not accept references to unreliable or unverifiable sources. When citing data, the source must be clearly indicated.

All submissions will be reviewed by an editor to determine whether they meet the objectives and scope of this journal. Those deemed suitable will be sent for peer review before a decision is made on whether to accept or reject them.

Before Submitting, authors are responsible for obtaining permission to publish any material included in the submission, such as photos, documents, and datasets. All authors listed in the submission must consent in being identified as authors. Where appropriate, the research must be approved by a relevant ethics committee in accordance with the legal requirements of the country in which the study is being conducted.

An editor may reject a manuscript if it does not attend the minimum quality standards. Before submitting, make sure that the study design and research rationale are properly structured and articulated. The title should be concise and the abstract self-sufficient. This will increase the likelihood of reviewers agreeing to evaluate the article. Once you are satisfied that your submission meets this standard, please follow the checklist below to prepare your submission.

Submission Preparation Checklist

Before submitting your contribution, please check that it meets the conditions and requirements listed below. Submissions that do not comply with the editorial policies and publication guidelines of Cadernos de Segurança Pública will be returned to the authors.

  • The submission is original and unpublished. It has not been published previously, nor has it been submitted to another journal for consideration.
  • The submission file is in Microsoft Word format (.doc).
  • The submission contains the following information in Portuguese and English:
    • Title (up to 25 words);
    • Abstract (150 to 250 words);
    • Five keywords.
  • All authors of the submission hold at least a higher education qualification, and the total number of authors does not exceed the limit permitted for each section.
  • All authors and co-authors must be listed, providing the following information:
    • Full name;
    • Contact email address;
    • Full institutional affiliation (including acronym), with city, state and country;
    • Short biography (position and academic qualifications);
    • Information on funding (if applicable).
    • From 2025, an ORCID ID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) will be compulsory for all authors, as required by CAPES (Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel). We therefore ask that authors who have not yet registered on the platform do so, and include their ORCID number (ID) and link (URL) in their submission documents.     • In the case of submissions with multiple authors, authors must have made a substantial contribution to the manuscript, so that they can publicly accept responsibility for its content. The criteria for authorship attribution includes: a) study design and planning, data analysis and interpretation, or both; b) drafting of the manuscript or critical review of the content; and c) final review and approval of the version to be published. Individual contributions must be explicitly stated at the end of the paper (bellow bibliographical references), with the authors’ initials and their respective roles, following this example: “LFC contributed to the conception and final drafting of the article, whilst JCP participated in the analysis and interpretation of the data and the final drafting of the manuscript”. To this end, we recommend using the Contributor Role Taxonomy (CRediT). 
  • To ensure the double-blind peer review, the main body of the article should be anonymised with no references or informations that enable the identification of the author(s), institutions or titles of research projects to which the author(s) are affiliated, and it must contain only the title, the abstract, the five keywords, the text and the bibliographical references. 
  • All references and citations have been checked for accuracy and completeness, and have been correctly listed in the submission’s bibliography, including the relevant URLs wherever possible. The most recent references (preferably published within the last five years) are recommended to ensure that the contribution is up to date.
  • All tables and figures have been numbered and labelled.
  • Permission has been obtained to publish all the photographs, datasets and other materials provided with this submission.

Articles

It will be accepted for review original and unpublished articles written in Portuguese, English or Spanish. They must be between 10 and 20 pages in length, including bibliographical references, footnotes, a title and an abstract in Portuguese and English, as well as five keywords in both languages. Articles should make a significant contribution to the scientific debate on public security, offering rigorous analysis, new perspectives or innovative solutions to contemporary issues in the field. Each article may have up to six (6) authors, all of whom must hold at least a higher education qualification. Interviews

Submissions should be between 5 and 15 pages in length, including a brief introduction to the interviewee and a relevant bibliography. The interview should focus on a clear and well-defined central theme, such as the interviewee’s career in the field of public security, their experiences, their reflections on recent publications, their interactions with the academic community and other thinkers, amongst other aspects relevant to the field of public security. Each interview may include up to two (2) authors, all of whom must have completed at least a higher education qualification. Reviews

Reviews of between 5 and 10 pages in length will be accepted, in the form of analytical and/or opinion-based texts on works published in the last three years in the field of public security. Reviews must be written by a single author, who must have completed at least a higher education qualification. Reviews may cover: a) Literary works: recent books, articles or essays relevant to the discussion of public safety; b) Audiovisual: films, documentaries or other productions dealing with issues relevant to the field of public security, with a critical analysis of their content and impact; c) Academic events: critical reviews of academic events, seminars or debates held at national or international level, for which a recording is available online, and which are relevant to the advancement of knowledge in the field of public security. Copyright Notice

Authors will retain the copyright to their works, granting the journal the right of first publication. From 2025, all content published in Cadernos de Segurança Pública will be made available under the Creative Commons Attribution-Non-Commercial 4.0 (CC BY-NC) licence. This ensures that the articles will be accessible digitally, free of charge, allowing them to be shared, adapted and reused, provided that the original authorship is duly acknowledged and the initial publication in the journal is cited. In addition to giving due credit, the new works may not be used for commercial purposes.
